GIG REVIEW & GALLERY: Stick To Your Guns – The Triffid, Brisbane

Wednesday 24 January 2024

Supports: Wet Work, Wildheart, Seeyouspacecowboy

Brisbane’s Wildheart took to the stage and stole hearts with their emotive, gritty blend of metalcore. Even those that weren’t familiar with the band can feel the passion emanating from stage — it was contagious.

The main support for the tour was Seeyouspacecowboy, and the Southern California hardcore act were met with much anticipation. Being their very first tour Down Under, fans were very attentive to their set to hear what to make of them. Lead vocalist Connie Sgarbossa displayed an impressive performance, which only sent a fierce shockwave of energy around the Triffid.

When fellow SoCal hardcore/punks Stick To Your Guns came out, it was all systems go as the pit opened up (and stayed open for the rest of the night). The boys celebrated ten years of their breakthrough LP,  Diamond and even if you weren’t a member of the hardcore crowd, the passion emanating from the band’s performance was strong. This was particularly felt with the second track ‘Against Them All‘ and from that minute, lead vocalist Jesse Barnett delivered the goods.

It was a night of “speaking uncomfortable truths”, and I honestly felt slightly underwhelmed that there was no encore set. However, that did mean I got to relive the night by having Diamond on repeat for the next week while I shredded Whistler, Canada.
