The alt/rock music world has exploded since Simple Plan dropped their rendition of The Lion King’s ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight?’. What came about quite surprisingly but like many SP fans, we are lapping this tune up in all its glory. It is the first track to appear from Disney’s forthcoming collection titled A Whole New Sound (release date TBA).
While Disney remains tight-lipped about who and what songs will appear on A Whole New Sound, this has kinda got our brainstorm caps on. What other classic Disney songs will get the pop punk makeover that we’ve been dreaming of? Furthermore, WHO else has been chosen to make an appearance on the album?

‘You’ve Got A Friend in Me’ from Toy Story (1995)
Our Last Night took this on for their unofficial Disney Goes Heavy album back in 2022, but how rad would it be if they got invited to make this collaboration even bigger? With Toy Story easily the movie soundtrack for everyone over the age of 30, you’d be silly not to put this on A Whole New Sound.
If not Our Last Night, then All Time Low would be our pick to give this Toy Story classic a new flavour!
‘A Whole New World’ from Aladdin (1992)
Surely this song’s absolutely going to make the official soundtrack. It delivers soaring hooks and smooth melodies and the opportunity for an epic rock collaboration. This is a track that a voice like Taylor Acorn or Hey Monday’s Cassadee Pope was made for. A band that easily complements any female vocalist would have to be Yellowcard. With them at the helm, ‘A Whole New World‘ makes for the idyllic serenade we didn’t know we needed.
‘How Far I’ll Go’ from Moana (2016)
Although it is one of Disney’s more recent film releases, Moana delivered a huge pop hit to the mainstream with its release, courtesy of Alessia Cara. The song’s theme of defiance and determination to make it however, doesn’t stray too far from the hopes and dreams of like-minded pop punkers. So a rocked-up rendition wouldn’t go too far astray on A Whole New Sound. Our boys in State Champs would definitely kill it here!
‘Hakuna Matata’ from The Lion King (1994)
Given it is the 30th anniversary of The Lion King, it’d be hard not to include Timon and Pumbaa’s iconic theme song on this album. It’s upbeat and energetic, so naturally calls for a rock band to put their spin on it. A tiny breakdown wouldn’t go amiss either — New Found Glory or A Day to Remember sound like they were made for this.
‘Stand Out’ from A Goofy Movie (1995)
While this song has never actually been covered to our knowledge, that iconic scene from A Goofy Movie where Max Goof dresses up as his idol Powerline remains close to everyone who grew up in the 90s. It would be a disservice if ‘Stand Out‘ didn’t get the honour of becoming 2024’s newest alt/rock flavour – with Powerline being represented by none other than Fall Out Boy. Agreed?
