Brisbane metalcore act Revoid have unleashed their sophomore EP, Evergrey this week and it’s a scorching six-track that builds upon their relentless debut in 2022.
Their latest body of work sees vocalist Dale Dudeson hone his focus on lyrical matter which acts as an emotional letter of support. With tracks like ‘Euphoria‘ and ‘Everything‘ offering slick yet powerful riffs paired with endearing emotions, Evergrey marks Revoid’s growth as a core act to watch in the local heavy scene of South East Queensland.
While Dale is a man of many talents having recently joined the lads in Bad Party, Revoid is the musician’s meticulous music offering yet. Get to know each song on Evergrey from the man himself below.
‘Everything’
‘Everything’ is my love letter, filled with regret and guilt, to every version of myself that led me to this point in my life. I was never the best person, even for myself, but every version of me had purpose, importance and value, and through everything I’ve done and all I’ve been through, I would be lying if I said I don’t miss them sometimes. Growth has never been an easy thing, so I believe it’s important to honour what I was, and what sacrifice it took to get here.
‘Visionary’
I think it’s safe to say we’re living in one of the most reserved, and yet, the most confronting times in society ever experienced. During such times, it’s now more important than ever to understand who you are, and what you want to be as a person, which is made more difficult by having to navigate that amongst the swell of millions of other people trying to do the same things. Your value does not come from those around you, or what anyone else tells you, and those with the privilege of a louder voice in society, and our culture of media, have a sorely neglected responsibility to do and be better. ‘Visionary’ is about the people who bring devastation to others who are finding their way.
‘Let You In’
Going through the motions takes us on many different paths and leads us to many different places. Sometimes the good things in life never quite seem like enough, which is worsened by the guilt of why that is. Sometimes not all of us are lucky enough to make it through that.
‘Let You In’ is a collection of thoughts from my experiences, and my story about where the worst can take you, and how sweet the end can seem when you’re tired.
‘Euphoria’
I’ve lost a lot of friends to lifestyles I wouldn’t even wish on my worst enemies, and it breaks my heart to remember that. I’ve watched so many fall in love with who they were on substances, and I’ve seen them give up everything in pursuit of that feeling, or to escape what they didn’t want to feel anymore. It’s such a bitter thing to be left with after watching the best person in your world become an empty shell, and to contend with your own destruction were you to remain exposed to that. Sometimes salvation really does cost you everything.
‘Never Mind’
A contrast between what we say and what we really mean, ‘Never Mind’ uses the dynamic between upbeat music and a sombre message about always being “fine”, when really, we are anything but. Discussing the notion of what is essentially Stockholm Syndrome for miserable feelings, sometimes they’re all we have, and it can bring us to the point where it’s the only thing we know. Sometimes feeling nothing can seem like a better alternative to feeling miserable, and in the end, we treat it as a coping mechanism, and become entangled in a cycle of putting off help, support, or change when we need it the most.
‘Fray’
Fray is an intimate perspective on what I’m going to see when I’m old and grey and dying, and I look back on my life. Will I be proud of what I’ve achieved? Will I be happy about everything I gave up to achieve my goals? Will I be satisfied with the way I’m dying, or with the people that are there when I do? I’ve given up a lot to be here, but for everything I’ve survived, endured, or enjoyed, there is always a worry of mine not knowing if any of it matters. We will all return to nothing eventually, so I want to try to be proud of every moment, even with these lingering concerns in the back of my head.
