Underoath are back.
The Place After This One sees the band take on a bolder stance in 2025, carrying that iconic sound from 2004’s They’re Only Chasing Safety. Over 12 tracks, the Florida-based band have produced one of the loudest, anthemic rock records we’ll see in 2025 and you can bet we’ll see a metaphoric rise in prominence.
Opening up with their heaviest track of late is incredibly ambitious, but you know what? ‘Generation No Surrender’ just seems to work. It forces us to grab its fiery horns and pushes us into the stratosphere as it delivers a blistering soundscape of metal. Meanwhile, ‘Devil’, in all its technicality and synth grooves, succeeds in producing towering waves of hard rock laced with soul crushing melodies.
The album is an overarching, seamless chapter of the band’s progression over the past two decades. Offering up plenty of fast-paced momentum, vocalist Spencer Chamberlain creates poetic emotions that in turn, balances the chaos that ensues consistently on each track. It is here where the track ‘Teeth‘ must be commended. Allowing us a moment to catch our breath, Chamberlain playfully toys with poppier melodies and although it feels sonically different, ‘Teeth‘ is a piece of contemporary metalcore that will fit right next to your favourite Silverstein playlist.
The playful bounces into pop/metal continues with ‘Shame‘ and while it comes off as one of the “softer metal” tracks, many fans will call this an undeniably catchy tune. Underoath, boys. You’ve produced yourselves quite the potent and highly addictive track here.
Now, if anyone is familiar with my listening tastes in metal, I’m a sucker for a good melody and heavy-hitting breakdown. ‘Spinning in Place’ brought similar energy to the rest of the record, but is a stand out as it is the perfect example of anthemic post-hardcore in 2025. It’s contemporary emo taking on new forms, ultimately paving the way for the next generation of heavy bands to follow suit.
Underoath have demonstrated that this year, they are far from done with creating music. The Place After This One measures the band’s former successes and articulately sprinkles the best riffs, the best melodies in with modern forms of metalcore. The record offers high-energy, moshworthy anthems in ways that we’ve yet to see from the boys and while they just toured Australia this month, we’re already very keen for this record to pave its own success on the live stage.
