Words by Bethany Taylor
Why have a pity party when you can have an ‘Okay Party‘?
Cheap Perfume’s new single shows that anti-fascism doesn’t necessarily mean anti-fun. Our latest taste from their upcoming album Don’t Care. Didn’t Ask is a two minute bop for fans of brash female vocals, straightforward riffs, and good times.
Since their formation ten years ago, the Colorado feminist punks have been maintaining the rage against sexism, capitalism, and oppression in all forms – drawing particular inspiration from the hellscape that is Trump’s America. Recent singles ‘Down to Riot‘ and ‘Woke Mind Virus‘ trod familiar ground for those familiar with Cheap Perfume’s previous work, such as their 2019 anthem ‘It’s Okay to Punch Nazis‘.
But not every track can be a call to arms. ‘Okay Party‘ departs from political subject matter and instead dwells on the chaos of touring. Sometimes instead of Nazis, you just want to kill your bandmates.
“The go-go-go rush of ‘Okay Party’ is a frantic memory of how it felt when our van broke down in Arizona last year and we had to play Berkeley that night. But more than that, it’s about the highs and lows of being in a band together for 10 years, sharing small spaces, the silly antics we pull, getting onstage even when you’d rather be in your comfort zone, and the homicidal thoughts we sometimes have about each other.”
– Jane No, vocalist/guitarist of Cheap Perfume
If you weren’t aware of their Riot Grrrl cred, ‘Okay Party‘ could sit very comfortably on a playlist made up of artists such as WAAX, Teen Jesus and the Jean Teasers, or even Dune Rats. Think of the class consciousness as a bonus party favour.
