Yorkshire’s melodic heavyweights Caskets are stepping into a new era with their third album The Only Heaven You’ll Know, out now through SharpTone Records. Frontman Matt Flood joined me to talk about the deeply personal journey behind the record, which he describes as “the sound of me falling apart in real time.”
Speaking with Matt, there is no sense of hiding behind anything. “Writing music is my therapy,” he explains. “I still have a lot of stuff I need to get out. I do not want to sit there and talk to someone I am paying who might not even care. I would rather put it in a song.”
That openness runs through the entire record. The title track is rooted in his past struggles with faith and self worth, pulling from his experience growing up as a Jehovah’s Witness and later confronting addiction. The lyric “Hell is the only heaven you will know” became the emotional anchor of the album. It captures his sense of fighting guilt while trying to move forward and find peace.
After the collaborative process of Reflections, the band decided to return to the heart led writing style that defined their debut Lost Souls. “We wanted to get back to that real emotion,” Matt says. “Some of the songs on Reflections were not about me and I think you could hear that. Now everything is personal. That is when people really feel it.”
The result is a sound that feels heavier and more human, where every track reflects growth and vulnerability rather than just performance.
Caskets will soon return to Australian stages, and Matt could not be more excited. “I love Australia. You have the same humour we do and you go off harder than most crowds in England. It feels like a second home,”.
Fans can expect new songs to make their live debut, along with a few favourites. “We have only played Make Me a Martyr a couple of times live. The rest of the new material will be fresh,” he says.
One of the standout tracks on the record is Our Remedy, featuring Australian metalcore icons Make Them Suffer. The collaboration came together naturally in the studio. “Benji wrote that second verse riff with a feature in mind, we just did not know who yet. Then we were listening to Make Them Suffer and decided to reach out. Within a week they sent back their demo. What you hear on the album is exactly what they sent. They nailed it.”
Matt says the band is hoping to bring the feature to life on stage when they hit Australia. “If they are home when we are over, we would love to do it live.”
After years of touring, Matt has learned how to protect both his voice and his mental health. “I have finally got a proper daily routine. I use a vocal steamer every day and do not go out after shows unless we have a day off. Talking over loud music ruins your voice fast. You learn if you want to last.”
It is the type of discipline that defines the new era for Caskets. Less chaos, more purpose.
No matter how far they go, Matt says the heart of Caskets remains the same. “When fans tell me our music helped them, it still hits just as hard as it did in the beginning. That is the reason I write. I love having real conversations after shows. It can be emotional, but that connection means everything.”
If Reflections was about finding their footing, The Only Heaven You’ll Know is about standing firmly in who they are. It is heavier, wiser and painfully human.
As Matt puts it, “This new era is deeper, more profound, more grown up. We are not scared to put ourselves out there anymore.”
