Ever since we heard them for the first time just last month, we haven’t been able to get enough of Tiny Red Houses. Honestly, their latest single ‘More‘ couldn’t have been named better, because those explosive guitars and catchy chorus has left us hanging out for just that.
Comprised of newcomer vocalist Nat Simms, guitarists Mike Johnson and Leigh Alexander and drummer Jeremy Buswell, this four-piece offer up tantalising catchy tunes with tangible value that will no doubt leave a mark on every single person they meet. Even after one listen, it’s easy to hear that they wear their pop punk influences on their sleeve.
While it is still very early days, having only played their first gig last month at Pizza Planet, Tiny Red Houses did manage to blow everyone’s mind that day and have hit the ground running with Nat showcasing a fierce, youthful persona who managed to captivate an entire room. We’re pretty confident that give or take two or three more shows, this band will become hot property as we look towards 2025.
So we thought it best to catch them for a quick chat now and introduce you to the band and uncover exactly what Tiny Red Houses are all about. We bet by the end of this quick read, you’ll be on the edge of your seats anticipating the drop for their next single (which we hear is coming up real soon!)
How do you feel after playing your first show?
Nat: It went really fast. Like, I feel like we were up there, and then all of a sudden, we’re off it. I feel like I’ve blanked out, but I feel good about it!
Nat, I heard it was your first time on stage in like, a decade!
Nat: Yeah! The last time I was on stage, it would have literally been for my year 12 muck up day about a decade ago. That was it. So, yeah, it had been a while. I hope I was okay!
So how did you all come together?
Mike: Leigh and I met through mutual contacts.
Nat: I happened to stumble across these guys on an online add for people looking for bandmates and met up with them one night. I was a little nervous and I literally had my GPS tracker so that my partner could track me. It was like meeting up through Tinder with three other guys. But yeah, no, they were absolutely fine. I feel really really lucky that I happen to have met the guys for my first band. One, they’re amazingly talented, and two, a vibe.
You guys obviously share a mutual love of pop punk. Who are some of your biggest influences?
Mike: Easily New Found Glory, Boys Like Girls and State Champs.
Nat: It’s hard not to say Paramore! Pierce the Veil as well.
Leigh: The Starting Line and Sum 41 have always been up there for me.
Mike: Simple Plan is another band we aspire to. They’ve perfected that pop punk sound, I mean, you can’t get better than No Pads, No Helmets, Just balls.
Your latest single ‘More’, that’s probably my favorite one that you guys have released so far, followed up by ‘Run Away’. On stage, you’ve just got that fresh 2000s style downpat, and it’s very reminiscent of early Tonight Alive.
Mike: ‘More’ was actually the first track that Nat put vocals to. It was one of the first songs we played together and collaborated. It was then that we ultimately decided that we were going to form a band.
Nat: It was the song where we knew we kinda had something good going.
So what’s your creative process like?
Nat: I think it’s different every time. For ‘More’, the guys wrote it and then handed it to me, where I put a melody to it. But as for ‘The End’, I wrote that, and then they made it into a song. So it’s different every time. Sometimes we even just get into a room and try new things.
Leigh: We always have a few songs going at a time so as not get too stuck.
Mike: Leigh will track his guitar part, and then I’ll be left with it for a week. So I’ll tweak stuff, add stuff, remove stuff, and all that. Nat will come in to record vocals, and she’ll have lyrics, and then we’ll go, that line doesn’t fit, so then we’ll just try and spit ball something on the spot. It’s a really dynamic process. We bounce off one another pretty easily.
Nat: I feel like that’s why we work so well together.
What do you have going in the next six months?
Nat: We’ve got a couple more singles lined up, I guess, and then we’ve got a gig with All Regards and This Space is Ours. Then I think we have another one up our sleeve, which hasn’t been announced yet.
Mike: I think what’s next for us is the same as it has been last year. We just love the process of creating new songs. We love making music and getting together and just working on stuff.
Do you guys have any dream collabs?
Nat: I mean if we’re talking on the Aus scene, I would love Stand Atlantic, because they came out with that Post Malone cover (‘Chemical’), the same cover we dropped a few weeks before theirs. But they acknowledged it! Between You and Me are also great.
And if Disney approached you guys for a cover, what song would you choose?
Mike: ‘How Far I’ll Go’ from Moana, I reckon.
